Design trends for 2023 according to Haworth

After a few years of uncertainty and change, we are returning to normal, a new normal. However, we continue to experience accelerated changes as a result of the challenges and obstacles we have experienced in recent years. Today, many aspects of life are affecting our mental and physical health; such as technology, our workplaces, family life, politics, weather, inflation, among others. This also impacts our decorating tastes and the design choices we make for the places where we live, work and operate. Haworth shares 8 design trends for 2023.

  1. Opulence

In contrast to the minimalist trend we've been experiencing in recent years, a new maximalist design theme is beginning to fine-tune. This will try to surround us with ornaments and luxuries in full opulence, which provide a feeling of royalty.

This can be achieved with luxurious fabrics, with exciting textures and saturated colors. It is also an excellent opportunity to incorporate the Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta.

"For an instant injection of grandeur, add warm, brightly polished metals. Pieces of shiny gold and copper accentuate organic elements, such as floral fractals, bring a comforting indulgence to a space."

  1. Down-to-earth

This trend seeks to deepen the innate search for connection we have with nature. Earthy Nordic elements and a modern palette of neutrals convey a sense of security and stability. "Wood veneer, blackened cork, mottled steel and resistant textures are used in daylight-infused environments to create dramatic contrast, while helping to define the boundaries of spaces." The incorporation of organic materials and biophilic decoration will also be sought to create a soft and relaxing atmosphere.

  1. Comfort and serenity

This trend is about creating spaces that allow us to immerse ourselves in maximum comfort. Just like 2022, rounded edges on furniture will be a way to achieve this feeling. It can incorporate many curves and parts filled with materials such as plush. Warm and neutral colors can be combined with organic textures, which will add serenity to the space.

  1. Autumn Notes

In the future, we see a longing for colors that are vivid and unexpected. As we regroup and reinvent our lives, we are drawing parallels with nature's changing seasons. The red, orange, green and terracotta tones of autumn are bringing an expressive mood to the spaces. Leaving behind the most recent neutral trends, these colors create a cozy glow, like a room lit by a warm fireplace. "Adding some greenery brings to mind an energizing hope, new life and the promise of spring to come."

  1. In Virtuality

Virtual meetings have become a common and essential way to work. Video conferencing allows us to collaborate with others within our organization, communicate and connect, especially with people who are physically far away. Therefore, the environment we choose for our colleagues to see behind us is an extension of us. Adding colors, patterns, and textures to your space can bring some interest and dimension to your background when you're on a video call.

Consider using decorative accessories, wall coverings, acoustic products, etc.

  1. Digital ringtones

Due to this same virtuality, many technological advances have emerged and the time spent in our imagination has inspired new designs and a new vision of the office of the future. A key color of choice for 2023 is Digital Lavender, which reflects escapism and well-being. This pastel purple color has a calming and protective effect on our mental health and provides a sense of security and serenity. This color can also be combined with blue, yellow and green.

  1. Good by nature

Incorporating sustainability and social equity into our spaces is good for people and the environment, and it also makes us feel good. Using new materials and technology, we can support people in work and corporate responsibility goals, while creating extraordinary and comforting environments.

We will be able to incorporate eco-conscious sustainable colours, materials and products that push the boundaries of design and create layered landscapes inspired by nature. The reuse or remodeling of old or abandoned spaces is also a way to apply this trend.

  1. Retro comfort

Although we are increasingly focused on the future, we lean towards the simplicity of past times. "A new twist on retro design will take our melancholic nostalgia this year and add a focus on wellness to create spaces that support mental and physical health through the comforting familiarity of the past."

Look to incorporate antique patterns that incorporate organic elements and geometric shapes, furniture with soft edges and textures, muted color palettes, spaces filled with living plants, and acoustic fixtures for a greater degree of privacy.
